FSW Donates Lidded Boxes to Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children

Three Officers from First State Woodturners met with representatives of the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children on Thursday to present them with nine turned lidded boxes for children that participate in Beads of Courage.

The Beads of Courage Program is a resilience-based intervention designed to support and strengthen children and families coping with serious illness. Through the program members tell their story using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage that they receive to honor and acknowledge each step of their treatment journey. Beads are given according to a program specific bead guide. For milestones in their treatment journey, they receive handmade one-of-a-kind glass beads that are donated by members of the International Society of Glass Beadmakers (ISGB).

First State Woodturners were represented at the event by Club Officers Eric Krum, Tom Sloan, and Joe Nestlerode.  Eric and Tom are shown above with Dr. Edward Anders Kolb, from the hospital’s Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, with the boxes that FSW members made for the children.

The hospital staff graciously hosted an informal Meet & Greet with refreshments for First State Woodturners and several other charities who also donated items for the children.

Charities donate items for hospitalized children

The members of First State Woodturners plan to continue making and donating boxes to the children at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.  We hope to have batches of boxes for them at least twice a year.  More information on the Beads of Courage Organization can be found here.
