Wood/Resin Hybrid Presentation at the June Meeting

During our June meeting, member Scott Wishart gave a very informative presentation on casting and turning resins. He discussed the different types of resins he’s experimented with, and explained their advantages and disadvantages. He described and showed us different coloring agents, molds, and other equipment needed. Scott also brought in his pressure pot, which is a modified commercially available paint tank.

Scott started out making wood/resin hybrid pen blanks, and then experimented with making blanks and patches for bowls, and eventually began making his distinctive burl/resin Star Wars™ spheres. Each of these spheres sells for approximately $200, including the base, and Scott said he can not keep up with the demand!

Scott uses the Vermec Sphere Jig (shown below) which he also brought in for us to see first hand. The Vermec is well designed, precision machined, and built like a tank. You and check them out at Woodworkers Emporium.

A PDF of Scott’s presentation can be viewed/downloaded here. A video that Scott made showing him casting the resin blank can be view here. Another video of Scott actually turning the sphere can be viewed here. Check out more of Scott’s work on his Instagram feed.
